The compact digital camera as an SLR? The revolution of micro 4 / 3

pen Olympus E-P1 and Panasonic Lumix GF1 , these are the first two compact digital interchangeable lens format micro 4 / 3 (micro four thirds, or m4 / 3, or four micro Thirds) a format which has a much larger sensor of the classic compact could, in some cases equal or exceed the image quality of some digital SLRs.
Among the DPReview forums, the busiest ever in the last period is devoted to the micro 4 / 3, passing all the classics forum on compact and SLR cameras from Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc..!
Olympus, brought out by a few months and the pen-P1, announces big news for the 31 October and the sites of rumors already announce the E-P2 . The sensor
m4 / 3
The sensor system of micro 4 / 3, is between 5 and 6 times larger than the current average of compact sensors.
Here is a comparison between the design of sensors from the site Anandtech:

The average compact digital cameras have sensors of the current magnitude between the central squares yellow and purple, few come close to that green living is azzurro.Quello the sensor 4 / 3, as shown, far more grande.Il blue and red are the sensor of APS, the largest is the full film and the classic format of the few (and expensive ..) digital SLR Full Frame (ie full frame).

The advantages of a larger sensor

pixel being equal, a larger sensor will:

1)-plans to focus more selective (less depth of field), thus avoiding the tremendous impression " flatness "of the pictures and giving more compact three-dimensional image.
2)-Increased dynamic range image (you can see in the picture more brightness levels between black and white, and therefore more realistic with more shades of light)
3)-Greater tonal range of the image (you can see more colors and various passages between one color and one in the picture are more gradual and then more realistic)
4)-Higher quantum efficiency / less image noise in low light (the picture is "cleaner" even when you raise the ISO to take pictures in low light) Here is a comparison

image from a compact classic success, the Canon SX200, and the Olympus E-Pen P1.Entrambe have 12 megapixels, the shots are 100 ISO.Si can see all the listed differences, especially that of the background noise that is easier to see to the untrained eye (especially in the shadows):

http:// www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/EP1/FULLRES/EP1hSLI0100_NR_STD.HTM The advantage

noise between the Pen E-P1 and a compact media can be easily quantified than 2 diaframmi.Ciò means that a photo taken at ISO 1600 with the E-P1 has the same (or less ..) sound of a photograph taken at 400 with the compact camera that go to the maggiore.Ed even with those with larger sensor 200exr such as Fuji or Panasonic LX3 , the advantage is still more than a diaphragm.

General

The compact micro four thirds-again, yet are only 2, and tests of the Panasonic GF1 are still scarce - affect the image quality of APS but their body is the size of a compact . Even with the normal lens mounted restano comunque più piccole di certe compatte bridge.
